Two of my sons are interested in weight lifting. The practically 16 year old, is fairly new to power lifting. But he is already finding pants that fit the way he wants difficult.
He needs more room in the seat and the thighs.
Plus, he's 16. He didn't want them to sit high on the waist. And he doesn't want it to fit snuggly around the waist. And it would drive me nuts if my back pockets were on the back of my thighs, but Aaron likes that.
So. This was a challenge. Not only did I need to make him pants that fit, I needed to make them be something he would actually wear.
I used these cargo pants that were in the April 2010 issue of BurdaStyle magazine.
I worked basically off the size 34, I added room in the thighs and about an extra inch total to the seat. The pattern is fairly narrow, more fitted than Aaron wanted. And I added about an inch to the entire back leg all the way down.
I've never done so many dang pockets on any one thing before and I'm so pleased with how they turned out. And most importantly Aaron loves them! SO I am a very happy camper. And now that I've perfected the pattern, I can make additional pairs easily.

How cool to be able to sew for your teenage son like this! I appreciate your description of the fitting changes you made. I'll be looking at this pattern for my husband who lives in cargo pants!
